Irish Food And Wine Pairing by Mike Birdsall

I think the Irish are unlucky.

Every St Patrick's Day I conjure up visions of eating corned beef and cabbage for dinner. Then I wonder "What wine goes with corned beef and cabbage?" The corned beef is too salty and doesn't work with any wine very well. Someone yells to me that beer is more in order. Maybe a wine from Ireland?

The climate of Ireland isn't the best for growing grapes. There's only one wine that that comes from Ireland and it's made by Llewellyn's - a farmer in north county Dublin. His normal produce is apples and he makes a lot of apple juice for upscale independent retailers. His wine is more of a novelty item at best. What is interesting about Irish wine is the Irish connection with Bordeaux. Irish names like Lynch, Barton, Phelan adorn the labels on some of the best wines from the Bordeaux region. As for wine making, the Irish are better off sticking to the black stuff, Guinness.

But I'm a wine guy and don't care for beer so I do some more digging. Guess what? It seems that corned beef and cabbage is more of an American St Patrick's Day tradition. According to Bridgett Haggerty of the website Irish Cultres and Customs their research shows that most likely a "bacon joint" or a piece of salted pork boiled with cabbage and potatoes would more likely have shown up for an Easter Sunday feast in the rural parts of Ireland. Since the invention of refrigeration, people eat fresh meats. Today corned beef and cabbage is considered a peasant dish and is more popular in the United States than in Ireland. People eat it on St. Patrick's Day as a nostalgic reminder of the Irish heritage.

If you want to try really authentic Irish dishes, Gerry at says that one of the very traditional Dublin dishes is Coddle which is still served to this day. The most famous dish is probably the Irish Stew

Many of these dishes had their origins in very basic peasant style food dating back to the pre-famine era (mid 1800's)when potatoes were the staple Irish peasant diet mixed with vegetables and meat, if available - the slow cooking process of the stew allowed for lesser cuts of meat. And man are these two recipes hearty.

But if your heart is set on Corned Beef and Cabbage, food and wine pairing isn't an exact science. Laurence with The Irish Wine Blog at says "I'd go with a fruity red with high acidity to get through the saltiness of the corned beef. I'll put my neck out and suggest a Chianti Classico."

For St. Patrick's Day, Guinness and Green may be more American, but In the spirit of food and wine pairing, try a truly Irish dish and pair it with a great wine.

More than 300,000 homes are foreclosed zombies, study says | Reuters

By Barbara Liston

| ORLANDO, Florida

ORLANDO, Florida A national survey found 301,874 "zombie" properties dotting the U.S. landscape in which homeowners in foreclosure have moved out, leaving vacant property susceptible to vandalism and degradation.

Florida tops the list of zombie properties with 90,556 vacant homes in foreclosure, according to a foreclosure inventory released on Thursday by RealtyTrac, a real estate information company in Irvine, California.

Illinois and California ranked a distant second and third with 31,668 and 28,821 zombie properties respectively on the list.

The number Casas em Orlando of homes overall in foreclosure or bank-owned rose by 9 percent to 1.5 million properties nationally in the first quarter of 2013 compared to a year ago, according to RealtyTrac.

Another 10.9 million homeowners nationwide remain at risk because they owe more than their property is worth, according to company vice president Daren Blomquist.

RealtyTrac for the first time analyzed data on zombie properties after a Reuters' special report in January examined the special problem of zombie titles, Blomquist said.

Reuters revealed the plight of people who walked away from their homes not realizing that their names remained on the deed and that they were financially liable for taxes and other bills related to the abandoned property.

In some cases, homeowners vacated after receiving a notice from the bank of a planned foreclosure sale, only to find out later the bank never followed through.

Zombie properties can be easy to spot as they deteriorate into neighborhood eyesores and havens for criminal activity.

While Florida leads in volume of zombie properties, Kentucky, with less than 1,000 zombie properties, leads in percentage, with zombies representing 54 percent of its total foreclosure inventory, Blomquist said.

Zombies in Washington, Indiana, Nevada and Oregon also constitute 50 percent or more of the properties in foreclosure, according to the report.

Blomquist said the number of zombie properties could be higher than represented in the RealtyTrac report, which used a conservative methodology.

In Florida, for example, the company does not count any property that has been in foreclosure longer than the state average of 853 days and for which there has been no significant recent activity. The report also does not take into account cases in which a bank chose not to follow through on a foreclosure judgment, leaving the property in limbo.

Blomquist said the long average time to complete a foreclosure case in Florida likely contributes to the high number of zombie properties, as people give up hope over time and walk away.

Blomquist said the findings overall show a housing recovery is under way but not yet deeply rooted.

"I think the empty foreclosures is less of a long-term threat but it certainly is affecting individual communities and neighborhoods," Blomquist said.

According to the Reuters special Casas em Orlando report, municipalities are left to deal with the mess when people move out after receiving a notice of a planned foreclosure sale that the bank then cancels.

Some spend public funds on securing, cleaning and stabilizing houses that generate no tax revenue. Others let the houses rot.

Unsuspecting homeowners have had their wages garnished, their credit destroyed and their tax refunds seized. They've opened their mail to find bills for back taxes, graffiti-scrubbing services, demolition crews, trash removal, gutter repair, exterior cleaning and lawn clipping.

In some cities, people with zombie titles can be sentenced to probation, with the threat of jail if they don't bring their houses into compliance.

In order to successfully launch your book, you're going to need an effective landing page that compels prospective buyers to make the purchase during your book launch campaign.

Keep reading to find out the key elements needed on your landing page to generate your desired sales.

Here's 13 tips to creating a book launch page that sells:

1. Domain Name: Buy a domain name that matches the title of your book. Then have it point to the page on your website where your book launch landing page resides.

This makes it easy to tell others where to find the book during your launch campaign.

As an example, the URL might look like:

3. 3d Book Cover: Hire a graphic designer who can take the cover of your book and create a stunning 3D image that will make your book cover really pop on the page.

4. Testimonials: During the final stages of writing your book, give out several preview copies to notable colleagues so they can provide quotes for the book launch.

Add these testimonials, along with a photo of the colleague if possible for a more powerful social proof statement, to the book launch landing page.

5. Book Description: Before deciding to make the purchase, people need to first get clarity on what they will learn or experience after reading, be convinced it's going to help (or entertain) them in some way, and what those benefits or outcomes will be.

Always address the "why" when they are asking: "What's in it for me?".

6. Headlines: Use compelling headlines to break up the sections of your book page into easy-to-read segments. Use larger font sizes and contrasting colours to make the headlines pop out and be easily scanable.

This way, if people only read the headlines, they will still get the important messages of the page.

7. Author Photo: Include a professional headshot along with a short bio so prospective purchasers can see who wrote the book and connect with you emotionally.

This makes for a key trust-builder so an essential element on the page.

8. Call to Action: Create a written call to action that leads the prospective purchaser to your ultimate goal, which is to purchase the book.

toronto criminal lawyer, toronto criminal lawyers, criminal lawyer toronto, criminal lawyers toronto, toronto criminal defence lawyers

If you haven’t retained a criminal lawyer yet and ended up at court on your own, don’t worry because you should have no problem finding a lawyer. Criminal lawyers can be found everywhere in a courthouse – courtrooms, hallways, cafeteria, etc. I highly encourage any unrepresented accused persons to approach these lawyers and ask them for a minute of their time to discuss any questions or concerns. A large number of solicitor-client relationships are in fact established in the halls of courthouses all across Ontario.

Duty counsel and duty crown are not the same thing

Duty counsel are typically Legal Aid Ontario staff lawyers, who provide immediate legal assistance to anyone who appears in court without a lawyer. If you don’t have a lawyer and you’re attending court for a first appearance, then the first person you want to speak to is duty counsel. This should not be confused with the ‘duty crown’ or ‘resolution crown’, who is a crown attorney/prosecutor assigned a certain role for a particular day (e.g. meeting with defence counsels to discuss resolving matters). The last thing you want to do is confuse the two and start providing the wrong individual details of your matter

If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer through a private retainer, then you’ll want to contact Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) as soon as possible to submit an application for financial assistance in retaining a lawyer. Call LAO on their toll-free number at 1-800-668-8258 or visit the LAO website at for more information. If you don't qualify for legal aid for whatever reason, then consider retaining a criminal lawyer from JusticeNet. JusticeNet is a not-for-profit service helping people in need of legal expertise, whose income is too high to access legal aid and too low to afford standard legal fees. Visit to find participating lawyers, paralegals and other legal professionals who dedicate a portion of their practice to individuals who qualify for such services.

Expect another court date, not objections and courtroom drama

Individuals who have lawyers will be addressed first and then duty counsel will assist self-represented accused persons typically in the order of the court docket for that day which is ordered alphabetically by last name. Be prepared for a long, uneventful and repetitive wait, where everyone’s matter is being adjourned to a later date.

Don’t speak directly to the crown, avoid discussion about your matter
